Almost everyday, a street bookseller from Tirana uses the fence of Villa 31, the former residence of Enver Hoxha, as a shelf for his books. All sorts of old books are exhibited on the fence - literature, science, education, politics. Part of these books are publications related to the communist past. We bought 4 books from the street vendor and brought these in the former library of Enver Hoxha. In exchange, we grab one book from the library - La Prehistoire by Andre Leroi-Gourhan. The books we added to the library were: Les drapeaux sur le tours, A. Makarenko; Speeches Conversations Articles 1965-1966, Enver Hoxha; Veprat 5, J. Stalin; Oeuvres choisies, Auteurs Progressistes Francais Modernes. The action echoes the practice of gift-giving in older societies. For us, Andre Leroi-Gourhan’s book, La Prehistoire functions as a link with a different time, a time when humanity experimented with other forms of organisation, of more commonality, of more egalitarianism.
